Palmanova and Magaluf get ready to be a safe destination for the upcoming season

Juni 10, 2020

Confronted with the most difficult season we have ever experienced, the Palmanova and Magaluf  Hoteliers Association would like to thank all the organisations, media and other interest groups for their support in working towards a return to “normality” within the most important industry for Mallorca, and indeed for our area. An area that we have made considerable improvements to over the last few years, and which we have managed to turn into a safe, healthy and quality destination.

A healthy destination

The Palmanova-Magaluf Hoteliers’ Association has joined forces with Calviá Town Hall to ensure International travellers can expect the highest health safety standards for both guests and employees in the upcoming 2020 season, now our number one priority for this destination.

As a result, hotel chains and establishments that open their doors this summer will do so in full compliance with the health and safety standards for both clients and employees, having implemented new processes at a significant economic cost, as well as service and product standards which guarantee safety against COVID-19,.

This public-private collaboration, which has facilitated the restructuring and repositioning of the area in recent years, is now being maintained and extended to guarantee health security across the entire tourism value chain, in an exemplary collective effort.

A quality destination

Following the model changes implemented over the last 8 years, Magaluf and Palmanova, having 72.3% of 4-star, 4 Superior, and 5-star rooms, are now above the average quality standards for Spanish destinations, and 88% of the hotels are to be renovated by the 2020 season. As for segmentation, more than 70% of the clients in the area fall into the family and adult segment, and there is also an emerging business and convention segment.

The effort made to achieve a more sustainable form of tourism has also led to a greater diversity of revenue streams and nationalities, with direct channels and online intermediaries now being superseded by traditional or “package” tours, which continue to coexist with the new models.

A safe destination

It is important to remember that the considerable investment made over the last few years, together with the commitment made by the authorities to public safety, highlighted by the recent government decree, has made the area safe and free of excess tourism, turning any attempts by an establishment to attract such tourism into isolated and “unpleasant” anecdotes in the town.

Since the beginning of this year, Calvià Town Hall, public law enforcement and different associations such as the hotel industry, the nightlife sector, shopkeepers, taxi drivers, etc. have been working together in preparation for the upcoming season and collaborating to ensure that the decree against excesses is complied with and that Magaluf continues to establish itself as a safe and peaceful destination visited by thousands of families every year on holiday.

Now is the time for us all to stand together, to support everything that turns us into a leading destination within Europe and to work towards the future of our destination given the uncertainty of when and how we will be able to open our hotels. The tourists visiting us have had a difficult few months in confinement, and more than ever, they will expect to have a safe, healthy, and wonderful experience, and we, as local businesses and authorities, are committed to this, “pitching in” to help our tourism, because the well-being of our entire community depends on it.

We at the Hoteliers’ Association want to once again contribute to the prosperity of the Palmanova and Magaluf community as soon as possible, and therefore we are grateful for the responsibility shown by our citizens, employees, institutions and the media during these extremely difficult times, by channelling the efforts that both the private and public sectors are making to initiate the recovery our community needs.
